The Case For The Dome

from scripture & reason
Does scripture support the theory that there is a dome, seperating us from the waters above and the waters below? Or is it merely refering to an 'expanse' as many claim? Let us look at the biblical references to the firmament:

Scripture
I am not a Hebrew scholar, and so can't speak with any authority on what the hebrew word for firmament truly means. As such I am going to share the views of someone who is a recognized Hebrew scholar. Please note, because I am sharing his views does not mean I believe we have proven what the word actually means, but rather I include it for additional support for my current understanding. Also note, I am not trying to misrepresent Michael by extracting this part of his presentation. Michael is clear that he believes there is no dome in reality, but rather it was a notion held by the hebrew people, which YaHuWaH did not correct. Please watch an extract from apresentation by Michael Heiser entitled 'Genesis and Creation'.
" quote from video"
If we read the scriptures without the preconceived notion of the heliocentric model, it is hard to elicit such a model from scriptures. Begining with Genesis, it is clear that YaHuWaH created a space between the waters above and the waters below, called in english, the 'firmament'. Many definitions of firmament claim it to mean 'expanse, not neccessarily solid'. To me, this is puzzling - how can the waters above be prevented from entering the firmament if there is no dividing material. Are we to believe that the boundary between the firmament and the water would look like something from stargate, where one could touch the water, that magically maintains its position above and below the earth.
The Wiki article on this subject states:
"The firmament is the sky, conceived as a vast solid dome."
It states the word 'firmament' is ultimately derived from the latin "firmus", a cognate with "firm". The word is a latinization of the Greek "stereóma" which appears in the septuagint (c. 200 BC). Strongs concordance defines "stereóma" as
"a solid body, a support, strength, firmness"
Now let's focus on the hebrew word for firmament:
raqiaà (raw-kee'-ah)
Here are some defintions of raqia from various concordances:
Strongs Concordance : "expanse"
NAS Exhaustive Concordance: "an extended surface, expanse"

As I've said, I'm not qualified to be able say abosultely, if raqia confirms a dome like structure or not, but from what I'm reading and from the scholars that have written about it, it does seem to be the case. Additional support for this comes from other passages in the bible such:
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." Genesis 7:11
Genesis reveals there is water above and water below. The flood account therefore is consistent with this picture. The flooding of the earth was caused by water coming from below and from water coming from above. I have seen it presented that there was perhaps some kind of ice canopy above the earth in the pre-flood era - however, this idea is surely nulified by the verse in psalm which states:
"Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens." Psalm 148:4
Clearly, the water above is still above in David's day, which is post flood. There is no reason therefore to include hypothetical ice canopies when they are not mentioned in scripture. Further evidence of a dome can be found where the heavens are described as being 'bowed'.
"He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet." Psalm 18:9
"He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet." 2 Samuel 22:10
"Bowed" is the hebrew word "natah". The NAS Exhaustive Concordance describes the word as meaning: " to stretch out, spread out, extend, incline, bend".

Brown-Driver-Briggs: Genesis 1:6 extended surface, (solid)expanse (as if beaten out; compare Job 37:18); — absolute ׳רEzekiel 1:22 +, construct ׳רְ Genesis 1:14 +; — ᵐ5 στερέωμα, ᵑ9firmamentum, compare Syriac below √above; —1 (flat) expanse (as if of ice, compare כְּעֵין הַקֶּרַח), as base, support (WklAltor. Forsch. iv. 347) Ezekiel 1:22,23,25(gloss ? compare Co Toy),Ezekiel 1:26 (supporting ׳י's throne). Hence (CoEzekiel 1:22)2 the vault of heaven, or 'firmament,' regarded by Hebrews as solid, and supporting 'waters' above it,
Strong's Exhaustive Concordance: properly, an expanse, i.e. The firmament or (apparently) visible arch of the sky -- firmament.
Raqa
Raqia originates from the root word Raqa, meaning:
NAS Exhaustive Concordance: "to beat, stamp, beat out, spread out"
Strong's Concordance: "to beat, stamp, beat out, spread out"
Brown-Driver-Briggs:[רָקַע] verb beat, stamp, beat out, spread out Phoenician מרקע platter, or bowl, of gold Samuel 22:43 I will stamp them down Ezekiel 6:11 beat (stamp) with thy foot, in token of contemptuous pleasure, compare Da ("" הַכֵּה בְכַמְּךָ); soInfinitive construct suffix רַקְעֲךָ בְּרָ֑גֶל Ezekiel 25:6 ("" מַחְאֲךָ יָד);Participle active as substantive construct (Ges§ 65d) רֹקַע הָאָרֶץ (i.e.׳י) he that (beateth out) spreadeth out the earth Isaiah 42:5, רֹקַע׳הַא Isaiah 44:24, ׳רוֺקַע הָא Psalm 136:6.Isaiah 40:19 a goldsmith with gold over-layeth it (literally beateth it out, Exodus 39:3 they beat out the plates of gold; suffix וַיְרִקְּעוּם צִמּוּי Numbers 17:4 they beat them out as plating. Strong's Exhaustive Concordance:
beat, make broad, spread abroad forth, over, out, into plates, stamp, stretch
A primitive root; to pound the earth (as a sign of passion); by analogy to expand (by hammering); by implication, to overlay (with thin sheets of metal) -- beat, make broad, spread abroad (forth, over, out, into plates), stamp, stretch.
