Flat Earth in Scripture?

It may come as a surprise to learn that scripture paints a picture of a still, flat, domed earth.   Given that most people are taught from a very early age that the earth is a planet shaped as a sphere, it isn't surprising then that when reading the bible, we carry the worldview given to us as children, and therefore fail to actually understand what the bible teaches on this subject.  To look at what the bible says about the heaven ad the earth, click on the menu above under scripture, and select the topic. I believe I have covered most of the relevant  references from the bible.  I have also included material from the apocrypha, book of Enoch, Jasher and Jubilees, as this helps us to more acurately understand how the hebrews understood what the bible taught.  Many bible believing christians will say that in order to understand our bible better, we need to understand the thinking of the people who wrote it - what did they mean when they wrote? How did they define the terms? With this approach in mind, let's look and see what the Hebrews believed by watching Rob Skiba cover this subject in his blog www.TestingTheGlobe.com :

“The Bible is, from Genesis to Revelation, a

flat-earth book.”
—Robert Schadewald

Unbelievers who don't believe the earth is flat, but believe it's what the bible says

The fact that the bible describes a still, flat, domed world has not escaped the attention of detractors of the bible.  There are numerous websites and videos, mainly from the athiest camp, argue strongly, that given the bible is a flat earth book, it should not be taken seriously.  Their claim is that either the bible is true and the earth is flat, or the bible is not true and we live on a ball.  Since, in their mind, it is an absolute certainty that we are on  a spinning ball, in their eyes it's a slum dunk victory.  I have included some of the videos as well as some links to websites to give you an idea of the situation

Robert Schadewald wrote an article titled“The Flat-Earth Bible,” in the nineties..  He was a former board member and president of the National Center for Science Education. He was heavily involved in the  creation/evolution issue, but his true specialty was the turn-of-the-century flat-earth, geocentric, and hollow-earth movements. He was considered by some to be an  authority on these topics, about which he wrote several articles.

Christians who don't believe the earth is flat, yet believe it's what the bibile says

There isn't any real doubt that a still, flat, enclosed world is how the hebrew people saw itand wrote about it.  A well known hebrew scholar called Michael Heiser has a presentation available online which goes through the literal meaning as described by the bible.  He says that without doubt, the bible describes what the hebrews believed at that time, and the hebrew does not allow or another interpretation.  Watch the video below, and to get to the flat earth section skip to  1hr:54 mins. Next to this video is a video by Rob Skiba commenting on Michael's position.

Michael isn't the only person to say this.  Many who have had an honest investigation into what the text says, come to the conclusion that indeed, it does suggest a still, flat, domed world.  You may wonder then, why don't they believe the earth is flat if the bible says so?  Here is a quote to summarise the position: From what  I can gather their position is that the Bible is inerrant, but was also written in terms of the scientific understanding of its times. Therefore, they dont consider the Biblical picture of the cosmosto be binding, allowing them to  "consider the actual arrangement of the universe." It's uncomfortable for them for sure, but they adapt and look at the scriptures and interpret them in a different way.  Below is an example of an article by a Christian taking this stance:

Scott Buchanan, long-time evangelical Christian, B.A. in Near Eastern Studies, a year at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a B.S.E.  and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. Published a number of papers on heterogeneous catalysis, and am an inventor on over 70 U.S. patents in diverse technical areas.
